The Tamale Children’s Home is home to approximately thirty children. These are children whose families are unable to care for them. In the community of Tamale, the mother is usually the sole care giver of the child, while the father is the sole provider.
If something happens to the mother, and the extended family cannot care for the child, the home cares for the child until he or she is old enough to contribute to the household. These children are not orphans or abandoned. Rather the home provides something more akin to extended day care until they are old enough to return to their families. The home is funded by the government, but it often lacks the infrastructure to meet basic human needs. The children of the home often suffer from preventable diseases and conditions such as malaria and diarrhea. The implementation of simple engineering solutions can drastically improve the quality of life at the home
