Sustainability is more than just a buzz word. The members of this community have to live with the products designed by the team long after the team completes the project and returns home. As such, sustainability is an important aspect to the design of the system.

There are three components to a sustainable design, economic, social, and environmental. Selecting locally sourced materials ensures that the finished product is maintainable by the local community. EWB-USA members train local community members and local NGO's to successfully monitor and maintain the projects for long term sustainability. This training and involving the community in the design and build process adds a sense of community ownership. Each EWB-USA chapter makes at least a five-year commitment program to a partnering community and a financial mechanism is established to ensure long term economic sustainability.
