The Ghana Project

My name is Corey Jones, and I am an Honors student on the UNF Ghana Project 2013. I love Ghana so much and I am having such a wonderful time here. The culture and the way of life here is so fascinating and I can't get enough of it. I miss all of my friends and family but I feel like I will miss this place a lot too. I would write more but I am exhausted from all the things that we have been doing, so I'm going to sleep now. I love all of you at home, goodnight!

About the Tamale Children's Home

The Tamale Children’s Home is a government-operated orphanage for children in the northern region of Ghana. Daily life revolves around the ability to work and take care of quotidian tasks necessary for survival. If a child loses even one parent, the remaining parent usually does not have enough resources to take care of the child on their own. When this happens, the child can be taken to the Home until they are old enough to help out and provide for the family. Of course, if both parents are lost, the child may stay at the Home until they are able to work and live independently. Even though the Home may provide the children with the basics like food, shelter, and water, there is still a constant threat to the children’s survival. Currently, the Tamale Children’s Home supports about 30 children, ranging in age from infants to teenagers. In addition to the children, the Home supports up to 50 people considering the staff and local children who attend the school located on the property.
